Lisbon comes alive in June, and there’s one man to thank: Santo António.
The city’s patron saint is honoured with a full month of celebrations – Santos Populares. For 30 days straight, every corner of the city features grilled sardines, traditional music, and dancing in the streets.
For first-timers, the festivities can feel a little overwhelming – especially in hotspots like Bica or Graça, where crowds gather elbow-to-elbow. That’s why we’ve selected a few more relaxed arraiais (street parties) that offer the same charm, just with a bit more breathing room.
Praça da Alegria
A stone’s throw from Avenida da Liberdade, this is a brilliant intro to Santos, with live music on weekends and bank holiday eves. Come hungry, the pork roast and sardines are the stars here.
Arraial da Misericórdia
Right at The Lumiares‘ doorstep, the panoramic viewpoint of Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara hosts a street festival until the 19th of June. Perfect for a drink while enjoying the view over the city and popular music.
Toast to Santos Populares – at V Rooftop & Blue Deck
For a really relaxed approach to Santos, stop by The Vintage’s V Rooftop or Blue Deck. From the 1st of June until the end of the month, we’re serving up a perfect little sample of typical flavours, with a local pairing: Lisbon-born craft beer Dois Corvos’ Matiné IPA and a mini bifana made our way.
Arraial da Vila Berta
Not the first time you’ve been to Santos and you’re in the mood for a proper party? This is it. This legendary block party began as a neighbours’ celebration and has become one of the city’s most beloved events. Running from the 1st to the 12th of June, it’s buzzy, fun and packed.
